How to Make Chocolate Whoopie Pies

A long time ago (like when Zoe was a baby), my mom made whoopie pies. I don't really remember how I felt about them back then (I probably liked them!), but the memory of the whoopie pies made me want to bake them with my mom. So, we googled to find a recipe and came across a Cook's Country recipe on another blog. (Cook's Country is an offshoot of Cook's Illustrated.) We followed the directions exactly, and whoa. This makes some HUGE whoopie pies. (this is my mom's hand, for … [Read more...]

Skillet Apple Crisp

Hello, readers!  We're here with a very fall-ish recipe for you. We visited a local farm not so long ago and picked a lot of apples.  My mom made applesauce with most of the apples, but she left some aside for other uses. 83.33% of us (everyone besides my mom!) enjoy apple pie, but we decided to make an apple crisp, because 100% of us like it. ;) I thought this apple crisp was better than any other crisp I've ever had.  Apple crisp doesn't really stay crispy when leftover, but … [Read more...]

Homemade Graham Crackers, Part II

Hi! We haven't actually fallen off the face of the earth.  We just kind of didn't blog for a while. I have been baking a lot on my own, but just not new recipes. I've made lots of shortbread for tea parties (it's easy and fast!), and also gingersnaps and chocolate chip cookies. I did bake a second version of graham crackers with my mom, though. (Here's our first attempt.) This recipe is from America's Test Kitchen's DIY cookbook, and we thought it was better than our first … [Read more...]

Apple Pfannekuchen

My mom makes this recipe every now and then, and I wanted to know how to make it too, because then I can make it even if my mom doesn't have time. (And I also thought it seemed like a fun recipe to make.) It's a little like a Dutch Baby, but it has apples and cinnamon sugar, and you bake it in a pie pan instead of in a skillet. Like a Dutch Baby, this is best when it's hot and fresh.  We eat our pfannekuchen for breakfast or when we want to have breakfast for dinner (or lunch … [Read more...]
